Why I Started Hughes CPA Services

Getting Back to What Made Me Love Accounting

Starting my own firm wasn’t a decision I made overnight. It was the result of years of experience, reflection, and—most importantly—relearning what originally drew me to accounting in the first place.

When I was younger, I loved structure. I loved order. I loved the idea that numbers told a story, that every transaction had a place, and that when things were done correctly, everything balanced. I was the kid asking for checkbooks to play with and building fake ledgers just to make things “line up.”

Somewhere along the way, that part of accounting can get lost.

The Long Way Around

Like many CPAs, my career took me through public accounting, private industry, and internal audit. I gained exposure to complex systems, controls, compliance, and the realities of how businesses actually operate—not just how textbooks say they should.

That experience was valuable. It shaped how I think, how I assess risk, and how I advise clients. But over time, I found myself increasingly removed from the work that made me fall in love with accounting in the first place:

  • Clean books

  • Thoughtful planning

  • Logical systems

  • Clear financial narratives

Instead, I was spending more time navigating bureaucracy, inefficiencies, and misaligned incentives. The work was important—but it didn’t always feel meaningful.

Choosing Health, Clarity, and Intentional Work

At the same time, I was forced to confront something more personal: my health. Living with a chronic condition changes how you evaluate your time, your energy, and what “success” actually looks like.

I realized I didn’t want to build a career around constant burnout or operate in environments where sustainability—personally or professionally—was an afterthought. I wanted work that felt intentional. Work where quality mattered more than volume. Work where I could slow down enough to do things right.

Starting my own firm gave me the ability to make that choice.

Why Hughes CPA Services Exists

Hughes CPA Services was built on a simple idea: accounting should make life easier, not harder.

That means:

  • Clear communication instead of jargon

  • Systems that are practical, not overengineered

  • Tax planning that’s proactive, not reactive

  • Books that actually tell you how your business is doing

I’m not interested in pushing one-size-fits-all solutions or rushing clients through compliance just to check a box. I care about accuracy, order, and helping people understand their numbers—not fear them.

Getting Back to the Fundamentals (Because They Matter)

At its core, accounting is about trust. When your financial information is organized and accurate, you can make better decisions. When it’s not, everything feels heavier than it needs to be.

This firm is my way of getting back to those fundamentals:

  • Debits and credits that make sense

  • Transactions that are categorized correctly

  • Systems that support growth instead of fighting it

It’s also my way of building something sustainable—for my clients and for myself.

Looking Ahead

This blog will be a place where I share insights on tax planning, bookkeeping, business systems, and the realities of running a small business. It will also be a space where I’m honest about the process—what works, what doesn’t, and what I’m learning along the way.

If you’re a business owner who values clarity, structure, and thoughtful guidance, you’re in the right place.

Thanks for being here at the beginning.
